The ex-wife of Meghan Markle’s father has made a series of damning claims about his behaviour during their marriage, including that he came home “smelling of women”.
Roslyn Markle has accused Thomas of cheating on her with a relative, drug use and neglect in an exclusive interview with the Daily Mirror – breaking her dignified three-year silence since Meghan and Prince Harry met.
But now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son Archie has been born, the 73-year-old has laid their apparent marital struggles bare and warned Thomas should “never” meet his grandson.
He was an “awful father”, she claims, and is unlikely to change.
Roslyn claims that during their 11-year marriage she was frequently left at home to look after their children, while Thomas would “live a single man’s life”, disappearing for days before coming home at 10am to have a shower, change and go to work.
“He’d be gone all night long and come back smelling of women,” she said.
“All the signs would be there. He’d have makeup on him and smelling of perfume.
“To this day, I’ve not spoken to a close relative of mine in 25 years after I learnt she had slept with Tom while we were married.”
Recalling a day she visited the studio where Thomas worked, Roslyn claimed one of his bosses pointed at a young woman and said ‘that’s Barbara, Tom’s girlfriend’.
“I was floored,” she said, before adding that her then-husband even went on to mention his alleged lover in bed.
She claimed: “Tom was half-asleep. He cuddled up to me and pinched my butt. He said, ‘What a nice ass you have, Barbara.’ I went crazy. I kicked him so hard he fell out of the bed.
“I knew I had to get away, but I had no money and nowhere to go.”
The pair were married from 1964 to 1975 – Roslyn was Thomas’ first wife before he wed Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland in 1979, splitting in 1987.
Thomas Markle, 74, strenuously denies all the allegations, including claims of him hurling abusive, foul-mouthed outbursts at Roslyn and showing little interest in their young children.
He would starve her of cash, she said, resulting in her shoplifting to put food on the table.
“Even one Christmas Day he strolled in at 10am from being out,” she added.
“He walked in to see the kids had opened their presents.
“My mum was there. He took one look at her and said, ‘What the f*** is she doing here?’ It was awful. That’s how awful he could be.”
Roslyn, who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, said her former husband has time and time again shown “he is not to be trusted” and Meghan “would be a fool to have him in her life” now Archie has been born.
“While he portrays himself as a loving father, he was anything but to our two children during our marriage,” she said.
“It may sound cliched but a leopard does not change its spots.
“Repeatedly he has shown to Meghan he cannot be trusted. She must know that now. I speak not out of bitterness, my life moved on many years ago, but out of concern.
“Archie deserves to be brought up in a happy home, not in this vengeful situation that has been created.
“Tom was an awful father. What makes him think he’d be a great grandfather to Archie?”
Meghan and Harry’s first child Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born at 5.26am on Monday at Portland Hospital weighing 7lbs 3oz.
Proud mum Meghan, 37, said her son, who is seventh in line to the throne, “has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm.”
Revealing him to the world, she gushed: “It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing. I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy.”
Prince Harry, 34, said parenting is “amazing” and added: “We’re just so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy.”
